How Does Counseling Benefit Children in Middle School?

Children of this generation are expected to make more choices independently, at a much earlier age.  Changing values, changing family structure and other complexities often interrupt a child's development.  To meet the changing needs of our children, schools have utilized the skills of trained counselors.  The developmental counseling program at the elementary and middle school level has three major components.  They are: Individual Counseling, Classroom Counseling, Small Group Counseling .

Every child participates in classroom counseling.  Children are often selected or volunteer to be in small groups.  Many students have individual counseling needs and may see me occasionally or on a regular basis throughout the school year.

Classroom Counseling
Classes meet with the school counselor for classroom lessons weekly or biweekly, depending on grade level, throughout the school year.  Each month a designated developmental counseling theme/topical concern is introduced.  Activities are created with these themes in mind.  Themes/topics to be addressed during the school year include but are not limited to:

Grade 6
Respecting differences Understanding ourselves
Alcohol and drug prevention Test taking skills
Anger management Cooperation skills
Assertiveness training Stress management
Goal setting Friendship

Grade 7
Teambuilding activities Budgeting skills
Emotional changes in adolescents Understanding businesses career exploration
Suicide prevention Refusal skills/real life role plays
Alcohol and drug prevention Harassment prevention

Grade 8

Holland self-directed search is
administered to students.

Other topics will be addressed as needed.

Small Groups  Many small groups provide added support for students with special interests, needs, or concerns.  Children are referred to these groups by parents, teachers, or themselves.  Each group will run approximately four - six weeks.  Suggested group topics are always welcomed.  The following is a list of current small groups offered throughout this school year:

New Student Self-Concept
Friendship Concerned Persons Group
Changing Family Anger Management
